Findings from the study indicate that, gold mining presents a paradox: generally, the national economy benefits in terms of royalties, revenues and taxes which are used for overall developmental projects whereas at the local level, communities are saddled with adverse social and environmental problems which have deprived them of their main source of livelihood: land and natural resources.
From study it was found that mining also have a direct negative impact on health mainly due to air, water and noise pollutions. Majority of respondents depended for their livelihoods on the mining and allied activities. Mining closure has impacted on the livelihoods of respondents.
There are physical impacts which are a result of mining from streambed causing alteration of channel slope and changes in channel morphology. Water quality impacts are caused by sand mining and dredging activities, reducing water quality for downstream users and increase treatment costs.
